Flathead Lures

The "Flattie" is Australia's favorite estuary target, and for good reason! They are aggressive and delicious. To master Flathead fishing, you need lures that "puff" the sand and create a commotion on the bottom.

Flathead Lure FAQs

Look for "Drains" and "Drop-offs" on a falling tide. Flathead sit facing into the current waiting for bait to be washed over the edge. Use a Flick Prawn or Flacid Shad and work it down the slope of the bank for the best results.

You want just enough weight to stay in contact with the bottom. For most estuaries, a 1/4oz to 3/8oz Donkey Stopper jig head paired with a Paddle Bait is perfect. If the current is ripping, go heavier to ensure your lure is "hopping" off the sand, which is what triggers the strike.

They are opportunistic. Small "Frogs" (schoolies) love the Curly Prawn 60mm, while larger Flathead often target baitfish. Having a mix of both, like the Live Whiting for big fish and the Armour Prawn for numbers, is the best strategy for a successful day on the water.
